What is a hardscape?
Hardscape is the practice of any landscaping referring to areas the upper soil profile is no longer exposed at the surface. What kind of hardscape styles are there to choose from? Typical small-scale hardscaping examples include patios, walkways, paths, sitting areas, decks, or any rocky finished landscape beds. Retaining walls are considered hardscape and are often used to create boundaries or differentiate levels of landscape. Most artificial water features are technically hardscapes because they require a barrier to retain the water, instead of letting it drain into the surrounding soil.
From an aesthetic perspective, hardscaping provides a “no maintenance look”, where less equals more. A multi tiered look with pathways, decks, and stone boarders fulfills the look with color and cleanness. Consider accenting your hardscape with a specimen tree or water features. Keep in mind hardscaping is also functional. We can utilize different types and styles of stones to cut out steep inclines and add steps. Hardscapes can also help landscaping features that would otherwise be impossible due to soil erosion.
